Antibody TestsSince the late 1970’s and early 1980’therefore, several canine heartworm antibody tests are developed and introduced, but such tests for dogs are largely replaced by the useful antigen evaluations. This lack of utility of the antibody tests is a result of how these tests detect the antibody response to exposure to infection, but not necessarily real disease. This is significant since not all illnesses completely grow.Microfilarial Detection and DifferentiationThe identification of the offspring (microfilaria) of heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) in the blood sample indicates infection with adult heartworms. Identifying offspring can also be accomplished through either one of two concentration tests: the modified Knott’s test (a technique requiring turning the blood sample in a mechanical device known as a centrifuge) or a filter evaluation. Practitioners will often do a fast examination of a blood clot to look for the existence of the offspring (microfilaria), but this procedure is not sensitive enough to rule out heartworms and only verifies the existence of an infection.
